If you're looking in the Dayton, Ohio, area for a reliable, capable SUV, you've probably checked out the Chevy Trailblazer by now. The Trailblazer comes with plenty of modern style to go with performance features that can handle the rough weather and rougher dirt roads. The question remains: how does the Trailblazer stack up against its competition? Buick's Encore GX comes to mind as a chief rival, so let's examine how the Trailblazer compares with the rival Encore GX.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Buick Encore GX - Differences

  • 350 × 175Trim Levels: The Chevy Trailblazer offers five trim levels with customizable features on each model. Two of the five trims, the RS and Activ, feature sport-inspired design cues and come with a two-tone roof standard. The Encore GX comes with four model choices: sporty features and the Sport Touring trim. You can get a black roof on the ST as part of an option package.
  • Cargo Capacity: Both vehicles have more space than their size might suggest. The Trailblazer comes in at 54.4 cubic feet with the seats folded flat and 25.3 cubic feet behind the second row. The Encore GX opens up a total of 50.2 cubic feet and only 23.5 cubic feet behind the second row.
  • Leg Room: Chevy's Trailblazer boasts best-in-class rear legroom of 39.4 inches. In the Encore GX, you only get 36 inches.
  • Driver Assist Technology: Each vehicle comes with virtually the same systems. The Trailblazer adds Front Pedestrian Braking standard, while the Encore GX does not.
  • Transmission: Every Trailblazer comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Encore GX only uses the continuously variable transmission, except in the Preferred trim, which does come with a nine-speed automatic.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Buick Encore GX - Price and Trim Levels

The Trailblazer's five trim levels start with the L model, which begins at $19,000. It comes nicely equipped with the Chevy Infotainment 3 system powered by a 7-inch touch screen. You also get Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Front Pedestrian Braking. The next trim, Chevy's LS, starts at $21,600 and adds the flat-folding front passenger seat, a six-speaker audio system, and stylish 17-inch aluminum wheels. You get LED fog lamps, heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, silver roof rails, and a remote-start system on the LT Trailblazer. Pricing on the LT starts at $23,700.

Trailblazer's Activ trim starts at $25,500 and comes with a 1.3-liter turbo engine, sport terrain tires, LED taillights, and dual exhaust outlets with trapezoidal chrome tips. You get the 1.3-liter turbo on the RS trim, plus dual exhaust with round chrome tips and high-gloss Black 18-inch wheels. Pricing begins at $25,500 on the RS.

The Buick Encore GX base model, Preferred, comes in at $24,200 and features the driver-assist package, Quiet Tuning technology, and 18-inch wheels. You can move to the Select trim at $25,800 and get the remote-start system and dual climate control. The Essence model starts at $28,600 and features LED lighting and leather-appointed seating. The Encore GX ST trim begins at $25,795 and comes with a signature black grille and integrated roof rails.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Buick Encore GX - Performance

Both vehicles have remarkably similar performance features. That's not surprising since they both share the GM parentage. The Trailblazer offers both the 1.2-liter turbo and 1.3-liter turbo in every trim but the base model L. You also have the option for all-wheel drive in every trim but the L. A capable front-wheel-drive platform comes standard, or you can opt for the intelligent all-wheel-drive system for better performance.

Power numbers come in the same for the Trailblazer and Encore GX. The option for all-wheel-drive on the Encore GX also exists for every trim. When it comes to performance, it's difficult to say one might perform better than the other. The Trailblazer gets a slight edge with its selectable drive modes in all-wheel-drive.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Buick Encore GX - Exterior

The Trailblazer's fresh new look has modern styling. A bold front fascia with LED headlights gives the Trailblazer an aggressive stare. Its sculpted side-body with soft curves offset by sharp lines strikes an athletic posture on the Trailblazer.

On the Encore GX, you'll find a smaller, more angular front fascia. It does offer LED headlights, but lacks the chiseled look of the Trailblazer.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Buick Encore GX - Interior

Premium leatherette upholstery comes standard on every Trailblazer. Available leather-appointed seats with heating in the front make the Trailblazer even more refined. A leather-wrapped shift knob and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel come standard on the upper trims and is available on the lower models. Technology runs through the 8-inch touch screen in the Trailblazer that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa support.

Again, the two vehicles appear remarkably similar. The Encore GX also comes standard with leatherette upholstery with the option for leather-trimmed seats with heating. The technology inside also features an 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa built-in. Both connected service platforms allow you to order food, pay for gas, and more right from your touch screen.

Both vehicles feature a connected services app that allows you to remotely lock and unlock your SUV, provide diagnostic information, and even let you schedule service from your smartphone or touch screen. The driver-assist packages are identical, with the one exception coming with the Trailblazer's Front Pedestrian Braking system that Buick doesn't offer.
