Even if you do everything right behind the wheel, are cautious, and obey the rules of the road, you can still be involved in an accident. It's just a real possibility as a driver. The following steps outline what you should do after you have been involved in a collision.
Stay calm and assess the situation
Accidents are scary and overwhelming and they can induce panic. It is important to stay as calm as possible, assess possible injuries of everyone involved, calling 911 if necessary, and relocate to a safe area if possible. Â
Share information
Once everyone is safe, and the authorities have arrived, it's crucial to exchange information with the other driver. You'll need to share your car insurance information and your phone number and get the same from the other driver. You will also want to get witness contact details and the police report as well as the name of the police officer and their badge number who responded to the scene.
Take photos
You will need to supply information to your insurance company that goes beyond what's included in the police report. Be sure to photograph damage on your vehicle and damage the other car incurred. It's a good idea, too, to snap a pic of the other car's license plate. Don't forget to note the date and time of the accident and any details pertaining to the collision.Â
Inform your insurance company
The next step if you are going to file a claim is to contact your car insurance company. This will be the first step in the claims process so you get the help you need. You may need a tow, for example, which your insurance carrier may be able to arrange. Your insurance company should help you secure payment for damages, medical bills, and handle communication and necessary arrangements for the other driver.
