What many drivers don't realize is that there are different types of spare tires. Each type has its own recommendations for use. Here's an overview of the difference between a compact temporary spare tire and a full-size one.
For small vehicles, a compact temporary spare tire is ideal. It fits better and doesn't weigh the back of the vehicle down. However, you need to take special care when using these spares, commonly known as donuts. Don't drive too fast and be sure to replace it as soon as you can do so.
A full-size spare tire is more durable. It performs like your regular tires and doesn't need to be changed right away. Full-size spares can take up a great deal of trunk space and may not be a good fit for small vehicles.
